HISTORICAL DATA- MARCH 2, 1943:

  • GERMANY:

In Germany on the night of March 1st of this year and lasting into this morning the British Royal Air Force conducts a heavy bombing attack on the German capital of Berlin. In this attack 257 bombers hit the capital. Because of dificulty in identifying asssigned targets using H2S radar, much of the southwest portion of the city, including the neighborhood of Steglitz is heavily damaged.  (Source:  Article, "Berlin unter Bomben . • NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK:

The New York Times reported today that New York City's Mayor Fiorello La Guardia had last night formally asked permission of the State Legislature to raise the city's sales tax rate from the present 1% to 2%, and he also sought their approval of a doubling of the rate of general business and of financial business taxes on their gross incomes. Governor Dewey passed these requests on to the legislature yesterday with neither a recommendation nor a personal comment, but some Republican leaders in the legislature and State Chairman Edwin F. Jaeckle agreed at a conference yesterday afternoon to grant, on a home-rule basis, that the city should have the right to levy whatever amount of taxes that it believed that the public would accept. However, the Times reported, there were other requests made by the mayor in his letter yesterday, and the paper said that no definite decisions had been made on them.  (Source:  Article, "Mayor Seeks Rise In City Sales Tax, Levies On Business" by Waren Moscow--retrieved from page 1 of March 2,1943 New York Times at Times Machine for that date).
